Like little road maps on your legs, spider veins are thin, threadlike veins that lie close to the skin's surface and are commonly red or purple in appearance. They are very common, especially in women, and can be hormonally induced and associated with pregnancy and menstruation. They range from very minor to extremely severe, and appear most frequently on the face, upper thighs and behind the knees.
There are a variety of treatment options for spider veins. At Veradia, we offer the sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a liquid agent through a tiny needle directly into your spider veins, causing them to contract and collapse. Depending on the number of spider veins, the procedure may require five minutes to one hour. You should anticipate about a 50% improvement following each sclerotherapy session. Two to six sessions at one to two month intervals may be necessary to achieve your desired results.
Do not come to the office on an empty stomach. You will not be having general anesthesia. We encourage you to have a small meal 1 to 2 hours prior to arriving at the office.
Shave the affected leg the night before your procedure. Do not apply any type of moisturizer to your leg the day of the procedure.
Please bring your compression stockings to all appointments.
You will have compression hose in place when you leave the office. Wear this hose for the first 24 hours (including during sleep) after your procedure. Then wear the hose for the next 6 days except when sleeping or showering.
You will have dressings over the sites of treatment. You may remove these the next days and resume all previous activities. Avoiding prolonged sun exposure, vigorous exercise and hot tubs for 1-2 weeks after treatment is recommended.
